Papyrus Painting
The Chester Beatty Library: Dublin Castle by Scala Publishers, The Chester Beatty Library opens a window on the artistic treasures of the great cultures and religions of the world. Its rich collection of manuscripts, prints, icons, miniature paintings, early printed books, and objects d'art from countries across Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe provides a visual feast. Bequeathed by the American shipping magnate and collector Sir Alfred Chester Beatty to Ireland, where he retired, the diverse collection captures much of the richness of human creative expression from about 2700 BC to the present day. Egyptian papyrus texts, beautifully illuminated texts of the Qur'an, the Bible, European, and medieval and renaissance manuscripts are among the highlights of the collections. Turkish and Persian miniatures and striking Buddhist paintings are also on display, as are Chinese dragon robes and Japanese woodblock prints. The beautifully illustrated and elegantly designed guide is the first to offer an informative walk through these exquisite galleries.
Egyptian Tarots with Cards by Silvana Alasia, X Amazingly detailed and gracefully beautiful, Alasia's tempera-on-papyrus paintings meld the stunning style of ancient Egyptian art with the mysteries of the Tarot. The cards come alive with stately, muted tones evocative of this ancient desert culture. To shape the interpretations, Alasia relied on the conceptions of Jean-Baptiste Pitois, who linked the Tarot tradition to the legendary Book of Thoth, a work fundamental to Egyptian magic. Replete with ancient and exotic symbols, these cards speak to the soul. The Major Arcana follow the traditional Tarot symbolism. The pips are rendered in the Marseilles style, with elegant Egyptian embellishments sprinkled throughout. This deck will easily transport you to a distant time and place where magic permeates the perfumed air. Once there, divination will be effortless and the unknown will reveal itself. Go there, if you dare.
