Modern Glass Sculpture
Modern Japanese Garden by Michiko Rico Nose, The Modern Japanese Garden is the first book to survey contemporary Japanese garden design, which has undergone striking developments in the last decade. It explores themes such as the influence of traditional Japanese cultural ideas on contemporary design, the miniaturization of landscape, sculpture, and texture, and the use -- by some modern garden designers -- of far more planting than was previously found in Japanese garden design. Photographed by Michael Freeman, an acclaimed photographer, most of the featured locations have not been previously documented in Western publications. In addition to important public gardens the book covers some of the best modern domestic gardens. There are also examples of experimental gardens -- such as a water garden with glass rocks; a mountain garden with flashing kinetic rods; and a rock garden built inside a large inclined tube. With an introduction by Shunmyo Masuno, one of the world's leading garden designers, this inspirational book is a must read for all garden enthusiasts.
Alvar & Aino Aalto. Design: Collection Bischofberger In addition to being the most important Finnish Architect of the 20th century, Hugo Alvar henrik Aalto was also one of the most noteworthy furniture designers of the modern era. His complete system--including stools, chairs, armchairs, and tea trolleys--is characterized by curving line formations that were considered exemplary. His bentwood Paimio chari is celebrated in a family of furniture design that includes such luminaries as Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der rohe, and Charles Eames. In collaboration with his first wife, Aino Marsio, Aalto also designed organic, floral forms in glass. Their Savoy vase of1936, created for the hotel of the same name, is legendary, and their group of bowls designed to be combined in a formation called the Aalto Flower has often been compared to the sculptures and paintings of classical modernism.
