Global Electronic Commerce: Theory and Cases by J. Christopher Westland,
Over the past two decades, businesses in virtually every sector of the world economy have benefited from the technologies of electronic commerce -- the automation of commercial transactions using computer and communication technologies. Electronic commerce has spurred far-reaching changes in business, on multiple fronts, using many technologies. This book provides a deep, practical understanding of these technologies and their use in commerce. Unlike other books on e-commerce, it does not concentrate solely on the Internet. Instead, it suggests that the Internet is only a bridge technology -- attractive because of its low cost and global reach, but unattractive because of its slow speed and poor user interface. Each of the twelve chapters contains an overview of a current theory or practice followed by one or more business case studies. A combination of academic theory and case studies provides a comprehensive picture of how business people use computers to revolutionize the selling and delivery of their products and services.

Understanding the Digital Economy: Data, Tools, and Research by Erik Brynjolfsson,
Understanding the Digital Economy: Data, Tools, and Research by Erik Brynjolfsson,
The rapid growth of electronic commerce, along with changes in information, computing, and communications, is having a profound effect on the United States economy. President Clinton recently directed the National Economic Council, in consultation with executive branch agencies, to analyze the economic implications of the Internet and electronic commerce domestically and internationally, and to consider new types of data collection and research that could be undertaken by public and private organizations. This book contains work presented at a conference held by executive branch agencies in May 1999 at the Department of Commerce. The goals of the conference were to assess current research on the digital economy, to engage the private sector in developing the research that informs investment and policy decisions, and to promote better understanding of the growth and socioeconomic implications of information technology and electronic commerce. Aspects of the digital economy addressed include macroeconomic assessment, organizational change, small business, access, market structure and competition, and employment and the workforce.

Business-to-business electronic commerce - Business-to-business electronic commerce (B2B) typically takes the form of automated processes between trading partners and is performed in much higher volumes than business-to-consumer (B2C) applications. For example, a company that makes chicken feed would sell it to a chicken farm, another company, rather than directly to consumers.

Business-to-consumer electronic commerce - Business-to-consumer electronic commerce (B2C) is a form of electronic commerce in which products or services are sold from a firm to a consumer.

Business-to-exchange electronic commerce - Business-to-exchange electronic commerce networks (B2X) connect businesses to B2B sites and services. This allows a business to evaluate many alternative B2B services for an optimal solution or price.

Business-to-employee electronic commerce - Business-to-employee electronic commerce (B2E) uses an intrabusiness network which allows companies to provide products and/or services to their employees. Typically, companies use B2E networks to automate employee-related corporate processes.
